Continuing in the vein of previous titles, ‘Fish Bone’ is yet another package from Black immersed in subtle nuances and elusive rhythms throughout. Title track ‘Fish Bone’ sets the tone early, firmly focusing attention towards the low ends as ominous sub tones and murky swells meander fluently around precise, organic percussion patterns. Next, ‘400 Rabbits’ combines scattered, crunchy percussion with eerie synths and dark haunting pads, before ‘Texas Tornado’ rounds out Black’s three originals with an infectious, weighty groove accentuated by off-kilter echoes and entrancing vocal shots.
The latter half of the EP sees label heads Fletcher and Bruce put their stamp on proceedings respectively alongside production partners Alex Brown and Larry Jones. First up, Bruce’s Yard One guise strips back the title track and introduces delicate, tantalising piano keys that fluctuate amongst the depths of the productions dubby and glitchy atmospherics. Lastly, Fletchers’ Adventures In Daydreams punctuate the release with their resonant and melodic, chord driven interpretation of ‘400 Rabbits’.
The release is testament to Black’s ability to deliver intricate minimal arrangements that ooze both quality and sophistication, and is a noteworthy addition to the imprints ever-expanding catalogue.
